Welcome to Week 4 

In recognising outstanding student performance at a recent College assembly, I took the opportunity to highlight with our community some common attitudes and actions present among the award recipients.

The key message was the proven capacity of these students to set a goal, work toward it and to maintain a 鈥榬eadiness to learn鈥. We were privileged to announce award winners from across a broad range of both curricular and cocurricular activities who achieved outstanding success through a positive attitude and high levels of effort and application in their chosen field of endeavour.

In exploring the concept of 鈥榬eadiness to learn鈥, I spoke of a whole school initiative we are adopting to encourage students to live in this space to support their growth and holistic development. This strategy was co-constructed by our students and seeks to provide prompts to students as to how they can intrinsically shift themselves into the ready to learn space and to push themselves to become outstanding in their selected learning pathway. We thank our leaders for sharing first-hand what they believe makes up a student who is outstanding for others and for helping build a positive framework that prioritises learning and promotes impactful strategies and philosophies.

In fully living out our values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion we become outstanding learners where we grow holistically and overtly share our gifts and talents with others.

In being fully engaged at school at an outstanding level, students:

  • fully invest in the multiple learning experiences available at the College

  • seek out, act and respond to feedback

  • set ambitious goals and challenge themselves

  • positively and fully invest themselves in the life of the College community

  • encourage and support the learning of their peers, sharing knowledge and co-learning with them

In adopting a daily 鈥榬eadiness to learn鈥 and seeking improvement and growth, students:

  • focus in class

  • listen effectively

  • adopt a positive body language, mindset and relationships with others

  • come to class fully prepared to learn

  • actively contribute to their own learning experiences and those of others

  • show a preparedness to continue their learning beyond the classroom environment

  • fully respect the positive learning environment, the rights of others to learn and adopt high quality levels of behaviour

In promoting this sense of student agency at the College, we encourage students to play a key role in managing their own learning. We aim to provide a flourishing classroom environment for students to shine, and in response we need to step fully into their learning. A simple way to do this is for students to regularly ask themselves five very simple questions developed by renown educationalist, Lyn Sharratt:

  1. What am I learning?

  2. How am I going?

  3. How do I know?

  4. How can I improve?

  5. Where can I go for help?

These simple questions can be adopted by parents and caregivers at home as well to help shape a conversation around the learning happening at school. It is a great way to genuinely engage with the learning occurring within in the classroom.

Of course, it is only natural that we all experience times when we dip out of the ready to learn space. Motivated learners however have the intrinsic capacity to recognise this and to adjust their actions and attitudes to reset, refocus and reengage. They don鈥檛 necessarily rely on teacher intervention, nor do they adversely distract the learning of others through their actions. This takes self-regulation, perseverance and a sense of mindfulness in being able to reflect on one鈥檚 own feelings and attitudes at a given point in time.

We continue to support the growth of these important skills and capabilities to allow out students to become genuine agents in their own learning. These are all connected into our wellbeing philosophy of providing a community environment rich in care, belonging and empowerment.

Our expectation is for all of our students across the College to adopt a positive mindset to learning and fully invest themselves in the life of the College. We have a multitude of learning pathways to support a personalised growth trajectory for students. We also have a broad array of support networks for students to access should they need assistance in shifting back to the readiness to lean space to shine in their preferred pathway.

We look forward to supporting positive student engagement across the College to promote a 鈥榬eadiness to learn鈥 in all students, allowing them to grow holistically to become Outstanding for Others.

Cafeteria 台灣UUApp - Lunch Orders for Friday 9 August

Due to the Senior School Interhouse Athletics Carnival, the cafeteria orders on Friday 9 August will be slightly different, requiring families to plan ahead. While Junior School ice creams and drinks will be available for sale as usual during lunch, please note that flexischool orders for Friday 9 August will close at 12.30pm on Thursday, 8 August to allow time to manage orders for the carnival day.

Menu Items for Friday 9 August will include:

  • Sushi: Tuna (GF) or Teriyaki Chicken

  • Salad Roll: Ham, Chicken, or Cheese

  • Ham and Cheese Roll

  • Pie

  • Sausage Roll

  • Spinach and Ricotta Roll

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am delighted to share the success of our recent Olympic Day with our Junior students, which was a vibrant celebration of team spirit and unity. This day brought our students together to participate in a range of activities that prioritised camaraderie over competition. The event was a true embodiment of our core College Values: Courage, Commitment, and Compassion. Students displayed courage by stepping out of their comfort zones to take on new challenges, showed unwavering commitment by supporting their teammates and striving for collective success, and exhibited heartfelt compassion by encouraging and uplifting one another throughout the day.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff, especially Mrs Batt, who coordinated the event, as well as our wonderful Class Community Connectors and Year 10 volunteers, whose efforts made this day truly special.

Year 6 Confirmation

Last weekend our Year 6 students embarked on the profound journey towards receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation with a Commitment Mass at St Thomas More Parish Bateman. This important milestone marks a pivotal moment in their faith development, reinforcing their commitment to live out the Values of Courage, Commitment, and Compassion. Through Confirmation, they are strengthened to become more active members of the Church, empowered to share their faith and serve their communities.  

Book Week

All parents are invited to watch the Book Week parade on Wednesday 21 August at the David Heath Gymnasium, which will start at 9.00am and finishes at 10.00am. The celebrations will begin with a wonderful play directed by Mr. Jackson for the students and families to enjoy. From there, we will transition into a mini parade around the gym for each class group.

Kindy:

  • To help ensure the parade starts at 9.00am, we are asking that all Kindy students meet their classroom teacher at the David Heath Gymnasium at 8.45 am.

  • Kindy families are encouraged to drop their child鈥檚 bag off at the classroom first before making their way down to the Gymnasium.

  • At the conclusion of the parade in the Gym, students will then parade through the Senior School campus as they head back to class. 

PP to Year 6:

  • Students are to be dropped off at their classroom at 8.30 am. All students will walk down to the Gym together at 8.45 am.

  • At the conclusion of the parade in the Gym, students will then parade through the Senior School Campus as they head back to class.

Father Figure Morning

Join us for a special Father Figures Reading Morning as part of our exciting Book Week celebrations!

This event is designed to bring fathers/significant father figures and their child/ren together for a magical morning of storytelling and shared literary adventures. Dads from our community will read their favourite childhood stories, creating an engaging and warm atmosphere that fosters a love for books. Whether it's a classic tale or a modern favourite, the joy of reading will be in full swing.

Come along and experience the power of stories to spark imagination, inspire young minds, and create lasting memories. Sign-up sheets will be located outside your child/ren鈥檚 classroom door for you to register your attendance.

Exciting News for Junior School Aspiring Musicians

We are thrilled to announce that music tutoring is now available for the following instruments:

Coffee Van Tuesdays

A coffee van will be available every Tuesday morning throughout Term 3 at the Junior School! This is a fantastic opportunity for parents, guardians, and staff to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while catching up with friends and the school community. The coffee van will be stationed outside the Junior School Reception from 8.00am to 9.00am, offering a variety of hot beverages. We look forward to seeing you there and sharing a warm, welcoming start to our Tuesday mornings together.


Junior School Library 台灣UUApp

Our Junior School Library is very excited to welcome author/illustrator Kylie Howarth on 14 August to present workshops to our Kindergarten through to our Year 4 students. Kylie is a local author and has written many books including Chip, which was nominated by the Childrens鈥 Book Council for an award in 2017.

Ticketed Events

Interhouse Play 21 August 6.30pm

台灣UUApp is delighted to announce the performance of the Inter-House Play Competition. Students from Years 7-12 work together within their house teams to compete for house points by preparing their own interpretation of their hat selected, Roald Dahl Revolting Rhymes. The students have been working very hard on this performance and are excited to show you their work!

 

Music Night

We are thrilled to invite you to a spectacular evening of music, where the incredible talents of our College ensembles will be on full display. This event promises to be a night filled with harmony, rhythm, and the pure joy of music. Join us on Tuesday 27 August at the Caroline Payne Theatre from 6.30pm.

Learn to Swim at Corpus

台灣UUApp offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people.

Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both 台灣UUApp students and those external to the College.

Bateman Junior Cricket Club registrations are now open for this summer.

Blasters Program for girls and boys from pre-primary to year 2 only $80 (this price increases for those who register after 31st August 2024) for 12 weeks, which is under $7 per week. Those who register before 31st August 2024 will go into a draw to win a $150 Westfield voucher.

For junior cricket an early-bird (before 31st August, 2024) $50 deposit is all that is needed to secure your spot.  Securing your spot will ensure your child has a place in a team as well as our early-bird discount registration fee of $200 for the season for players in school year 6 and below (in 2024) and $220 for players in school year 7 and above (in 2024).  The balance of the registration fee is not payable until September 2024.  Those who register before 31st August 2024 also go into a draw to win a $150 Westfield voucher.

For the 2024/25 season, Bateman have partnerships with established, local cricket training facilities for those who want specialised coaching at a discounted rate to fast-track their skills.  BJCC will also look to develop its coaches with additional support from these specialised training providers.  Bateman JCC will also match players to the year team, which reflects their skill level including the opportunity to play up.
